What ASTM E1105 Water Testing Involves

ASTM E1105 water testing sprays an installed window, door, skylight or curtain wall with water while an air pressure difference pushes the water inward, then checks the inside for leaks. It’s the ASTM International standard test method for field determination of water penetration of installed exterior windows, skylights, doors and curtain walls, and part of our water intrusion work.

The water comes from a calibrated spray rack on the outside. The pressure difference usually comes from a sealed chamber built against the inside face, with air drawn out so the outside air pushes water inward, much like wind-driven rain. The test pressure is set before testing, usually from the product’s rating or the project’s specifications, so we never guess at one.

Procedure A: Uniform Static Pressure

Procedure A holds a steady air pressure difference while water is sprayed on the opening.

Procedure B: Cyclic Static Pressure

Procedure B cycles the pressure difference during the spray. Which procedure applies depends on the project’s specifications or the purpose of the test.

When ASTM E1105 Testing Is Used

ASTM E1105 testing is used when a window, door, skylight or curtain wall is the likely source of water and someone needs a clear, standardized answer. Common situations:

  • Stains below or beside a window, door or skylight
  • Leaks that show up only in wind-driven rain
  • New or replacement windows and doors that need checking after installation
  • An insurance claim or dispute where the window or door system is the suspected cause
  • Storefronts and curtain walls on commercial buildings

Field water testing is also part of a building envelope inspection, where it backs up what we see on the walls. When a leak involves several openings or a dispute over cause, forensic leak detection folds the test results into a full investigation and report. Our article on window and door leaks in Los Angeles explains how water gets in around openings.

Our ASTM E1105 Testing Process

We set the test conditions, build the chamber and spray rack, run the test, isolate any leak and document the results. Each opening is tested on its own, so the number of openings sets how long testing takes.

1. Set the Test Conditions

We review the leak history, then confirm the procedure and test pressure from the product’s rating or the project’s specifications.

2. Set Up the Chamber and Spray Rack

A chamber gets sealed against the inside of the window or door, and a calibrated spray rack goes on the outside.

3. Run the Test

We spray the opening while holding the pressure difference and watch the inside face, frame and surrounding wall for water.

4. Isolate the Leak Path

When water gets through, we cover sections with tape or plastic and retest one part at a time: the glass edges, the frame corners, then the joint where the frame meets the wall.

5. Document the Results

The record shows the procedure, test pressure, results and exactly where water got through, with photos.

ASTM E1105 Testing or a Leak Inspection?

Start with a leak inspection if you don’t know where the water is coming from, and choose ASTM E1105 testing when a window, door, skylight or curtain wall is the suspected source and you need proof.

Leak inspection ASTM E1105 water testing
Best when The source is unknown An opening is the suspected source
Method Thermal camera and moisture meters Calibrated spray rack plus an air pressure difference
Result Where the water is likely getting in Whether the opening leaks, and where, under recorded conditions

Often we use both: the inspection narrows down the source, and the test confirms it. When testing shows a window is leaking, window leak repair fixes the part that failed.

ASTM E1105 Water Testing FAQs

No. A hose test wets the outside of an opening without pushing the water inward. ASTM E1105 adds a controlled air pressure difference and records the test conditions, so anyone reviewing the result knows exactly what was tested.
